Defense lawyers asked a Dauphin County judge on Monday to split the criminal cases against former athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz.

Curley and Schultz are charged with failing to report suspected child abuse and lying to a grand jury. They have pleaded not guilty. Their trial is scheduled to start in January.

A spokesman for the state attorney general's office has declined to comment. Prosecutors have until Oct. 1 to file a response with the court.

Sandusky was convicted of molesting 10 boys, some on campus. He maintains his innocence.
