State officials have voted to revoke the pension of a former New Jersey police officer who sought nude photos of a 13-year-old girl online.

The Police and Firemen's Retirement System's Board of Trustees voted Monday to take the pension of James Haspel, who had served with Madison police force for 26 years. He was sentenced last December to six years in state prison for soliciting photos from an investigator posing as the girl.

The vote came after William Claxton, an attorney for Haspel's family, told board members that taking away the pension would unfairly punish the officer's wife and two teenage children But a majority of board members argued Haspel should have thought of such consequences before he sought the photos.

Haspel can appeal the ruling if he desires.
