Not only are fewer people watching TV overall, fewer people have cable and broadband internet. While the decline in TV viewers is no surprise, given the rise of alternatives over the past 10 years, I found the broadband internet stat to be unexpected.

According to Business Insider, the culprit in this migration away from broadband is free wi-fi. It says that as more businesses offer free internet access, more people are taking advantage of it and dropping their ISP. Business Insider also blames (or credits) the availability of free wi-fi with the decline in cable subscribers; people can watch their "shows, movies, or videos" on their tablet, phone, or laptop. As far as TV goes, Business Insider reports that television, including broadcast and cable, just finished the worst 12 months in the medium's history.
