Former Penn State University president Graham Spanier has filed a civil lawsuit to force the school to release emails related to its investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The lawsuit was filed late Friday in Centre County court. The Centre Daily Times newspaper first reported it on its website.

The lawsuit says Spanier wants the emails so he can better recall events, citing emails sent between 1998 and 2004. Penn State hasn't commented. It's conducting its own investigation into the abuse scandal. The effort is led by ex-FBI chief Louis Freeh.

Spanier was ousted Nov. 9, four days after Sandusky was charged with dozens of sexual-assault counts.

Prosecutors say eight of 10 boys Sandusky is accused of abusing were attacked on campus.

Sandusky denies the allegations.
