The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says Irvington police were pursuing the vehicle when it hit another vehicle and slammed into a utility pole late Sunday night. It had been reported stolen earlier that day.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly says Zion James of Newark was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other juveniles in the carjacked vehicle -- a 17-year-old from Irvington and two Newark youths, ages 14 and 15 -- were arrested, and a handgun was recovered in the vehicle.

Fennelly says a person in the vehicle that was hit was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
