Carbon monoxide suspected in deaths of young mom, daughter

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say carbon monoxide may be responsible for the deaths of a young mother and her daughter who were found in a northern New Jersey home.

Essex County prosecutors say the bodies of 29-year-old Octavia Campbell and 7-year-old Christiana Campbell were found Wednesday morning at a Dodd Street home in East Orange. They were found by the mother's boyfriend, who went to the home because he was concerned that he couldn't reach the woman via telephone.

Prosecutors say a utility company had shut off power at the home on Tuesday, and a gas generator was being used there without proper ventilation. They also say there was an inoperable carbon monoxide detector in the home.

There was no sign of trauma or foul play. But a cause of death for both victims has not been determined.
