PSE&G is down to a handful of outages following the Fourth of July weekend storms. The utility says the remaining outages are “complex, requiring crews to rebuild damaged sections of the electric system, replace poles or equipment and make repairs in areas with significant storm damage.”
JCP&L still has around 8,000 customers without power as of 4 a.m., mostly in Morris and Sussex counties.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill continues to defend not declaring a state of emergency and told reporters Tuesday the state has “swung into action really aggressively.” She has held daily meetings with elected officials and OEM managers. She has also made sure that resources are available and that they know how to apply for it.
Rep. Tom Kean, R-NJ, 7th District said he has sent letters to the heads of JCP&L and PSE&G “demanding answers” about why restoration has taken so long and what they are doing to plan for future events. Shore Republican Assemblymen Greg McGuckin and Paul Kanitra said that the power grid is built with “duct tape and prayers” while the state spent billions on wind farms that were never built.

SAYREVILLE – A federal agent and his wife were both found dead at their home in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide.
On Friday, Sayreville police responded to a residence on Glynn Court.
Inside, officers found 46-year-old Kelly Iatauro unresponsive, while 52-year-old Christopher Iatauro was dead in the backyard.
Christopher Iatauro is believed to have been the shooter, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said on Tuesday.
He was a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, records from 2019 and 2020 show.
🔗 Criminal charges possible after tractor kills teen on family farm

FRANKLIN (Gloucester) — A 13-year-old boy has died after an apparent tractor accident in South Jersey.
Police got the call around 5:30 p.m. Monday. They found the young teen pinned under the tractor at a Franklin Township home along Swedesboro Road.
Franklin Township Police Chief Matthew DeCesari told 6abc Action News that first responders got the tractor off the boy, who was in a puddle of mud, and performed CPR. They got back a faint heartbeat, but it wasn't enough. He died from his injuries early Tuesday morning at Cooper University Hospital.
An adult male at the scene was also hurt. He was hospitalized for unspecified injuries.
So far, investigators have found that the teen was riding the tractor with the man when it flipped. The victim was fatally pinned. It appeared they were digging a hole on the property.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office is now involved in the investigation, police said. There's a chance that criminal charges could be filed, according to DeCesari. However, there's no word on who prosecutors would potentially charge or with what offenses.

OCEAN TOWNSHIP (Monmouth) — The future of a BJ's Wholesale Club at the Jersey Shore has yet to be determined following a partial roof collapse on Monday.
The roof fell into the bakery section of the store on Route 35 in Ocean Township followed by a wave of water around 11:30 a.m. None of the 27 people inside the store at the time were injured include three people captured on video who ran as the ceiling fell in.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill visited the store Tuesday afternoon and spoke as a mom where a warehouse store is a place where one goes with their kids.
“So, we’re working really hard to make sure that we assess why this happened — make sure we’re doing everything we need to do to make sure our buildings are sound and then in these unexpected weather events, that we’re creating more and more resiliency and that our first responders are well trained,” Sherrill said.
Ocean Township Mayor John Napolitani said that the company has not made any assessment of the store and whether it can reopen or has to be rebuilt.
"They're clearing out the entire store right now of all the perishable items. They've donated a significant amount of what they could, and they're taking everything else out," Napolitani said.

CHESTER TOWNSHIP — Investigators have been working on the gruesome killing of a woman at her young family’s rural township home.
On a Saturday afternoon last month, first responders and Chester Township Police received a 911 call from a house on Pottersville Road.
A 35-year-old resident was found dead inside, after having been repeatedly stabbed.
Within a week, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office publicly confirmed the June 6 death as a homicide.
By July 1, law enforcement working the case issued a public plea for any information or possible surveillance footage from the area.
The victim’s identity, Brooke Hanlon, was shared by Chester Police, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
Hanlon was a licensed professional counselor who had been practicing since 2015 — most recently with LifeStance Health, based in nearby Bernardsville.
