County Prosecutor Ted Housel says he has submitted his resignation, which will take effect midnight Sunday. But he did not disclose what his future plans entail.

Housel's five-year term in office expired this week, but it was believed that he would remain in office indefinitely on a holdover basis until his successor was confirmed by the state Senate.

James McClain, the county's first assistant prosecutor and Gov. Chris Christie's choice to be the next prosecutor, will take over for Housel on an interim basis. It's not known when the senate will consider his nomination.

Housel, who was appointed prosecutor by former Gov. Jon Corzine, says he "could not be more thrilled" that McClain will be his successor.
