Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow says 38-year-old Daniel Rios of Elizabeth has been charged with felony murder and burglary in the death of Annette Hempel.

Prosecutors say Rios apparently forced his way into Hemple's residence, strangled her, and then stole about $360 in loose change that he cashed in at a local supermarket.

It is not immediately clear if he has a lawyer. He was arrested last week and is being held on $1.5 million bail.

Officials said Hempel was last seen alive on May 24, and discovered dead a few hours later, by a family member who lived on the second-floor of Hempel's two-family home.
