Thirty-six years ago this week, The Carpenters were at No. 2 on the singles chart with "We've Only Just Begun." Sure, lots of people remember that, but did you know that song was originally written for a bank advertisement?

That's right the duo's signature song was really a jingle written for Cocker National Bank, aka The Cocker Bank, which would later be bought by Wells Fargo in 1986. The song was written by Roger Nichols in collaboration with Paul Williams whose vocals you hear in the ad.

Richard Carpenter saw the commercial and believed the song had hit potential. He wasn't wrong. Their version would go on to be nominated for Grammy Song of the Year. It was included on BMI's million performances list, sold a million copies of sheet music, and in 1998 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for recordings "of lasting quality or historical significance."

The story doesn't end here, in fact It comes full circle as it was used this year in a commercial for Lowes Home Improvement. Featuring a cover by Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter Joanna Wang.

So who's version was the best? Let us know in the comments.
