Come Nov. 1, the average family of four in New Jersey and across the country that receive food stamps will bring in about $36 less in monthly benefits as the temporary increase to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) runs out.

Nearly one million New Jerseyans will see a cut in their federal food assistance benefits this fall, when a temporary boost to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expires on October 31.

New Jerseyans in need of help putting food on the table are finding themselves being put on hold because of slow response from the state.

Interesting. According to this story, Newark Mayor Cory Booker will be meeting the challenge of a Twitter follower and abide by the SNAP program for a week. The challenge came about over an exchange he had with the follower identified as @MWadeNC, saying, in so many words, that our government’s investment in such things as schools and nutrition, as opposed to police and prisons, would reap wealth

I hope never to have to go on food stamps. However, the program has been a lifeline for many here in New Jersey and across the nation. For others though, it’s become a way of life, and one can’t deny that there have been abuses of the program. With the federal deficit being as high as it is, so cuts are in order.
