In a new report from Junior Achievement USA and PwC US, nearly a quarter of millennials (ages 18-30) said they believe their loan debt will "ultimately be forgiven."

Stephanie Bell, director of marketing and media relations for Junior Achievement, said the group was surprised by the statistic, but said it could be the result of graduates who are either in or headed for the private sector.

"Their loans may be forgiven after they're with the organization for a certain period of time," Bell said.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, according to the federal government, is available to borrowers who "have made 120 qualifying payments" on their loans "while employed full time by certain public service employers." The program is intended to encourage individuals toward public service jobs.

Leslie Beck, principal with Compass Wealth Management in Wood Ridge, said there are a number of programs with which student loans can essentially be forgiven.

"You'll actually see that, slowly but surely, the policies of the government toward student loans has indeed been marching toward easier and easier methods of having your student loans at least partially forgiven," Beck said.

Those who work for a non-profit can also get a break, as well as teachers in low-income communities.
