Somewhere in your life, you're going to be confronted by a bully. How you handle that situation will determine whether you end up a confident conquering human being or someone who's scared by life.

One way to stop bullying is not to let the bully win — but that's exactly what Rumson-Fair Haven High School is doing by cancelling homecoming.  They're afraid that the students would elect such an unlikely pair that it COULD elicit mocking.  What if they did? Do they not have anti-bullying laws that could be applied to those students, regardless of how ridiculous they are?

Are they saying that the vast majority of students at Rumson-Fair Haven High School are bullies? That's a pretty sad statement.  Also, Do the elected students have to accept the honor? And finally, do we really need a homecoming king and queen at all?

District Superintendent Peter Righi told redbankgreen.com that the event has "kind of outlived it's usefullness" and I agree. I think that would have been a much better and more acceptable reason to stop the elections than to admit to a fear of bullying. That just lets the bullies win — and that's definitely sending the wrong message to students as well as teachers, parents and everyone else in New Jersey.
