The state Environmental Protection Department has placed traps in the woods and captured  a bear on Oct. 5. That bear was killed.

DEP spokesman Bob Considine tells The Record (http://bit.ly/1X2ybUo ) newspaper officials don't know if that was the bear that three different sets of hikers said was acting aggressively. Considine says the bear was aggressive after its capture.

Considine says this is the time of year when black bears start preparing for winter and hibernation by actively foraging for food.

The DEP expects to decide later this week whether to reopen the forest.
