Amidst the latest report that some players on the Sayreville HS football team may have been digitally penetrated by their teammates – some parents are wondering why the entire program had to be scrapped for a few bad apples.

These parents feel that players who may have had nothing to do with the alleged offenses are being penalized along with the alleged perpetrators – as are some of the ancillary actors – like band members, cheerleaders and the like.

What’s sad is that these same parents are forgetting that crimes here are likely to have been committed.
And that – living in the age that we do- it’s not as easy as singling out one or two miscreants and dealing with it privately.

Not when the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is involved.

And there’s the likelihood that some members of the coaching staff could possibly face criminal charges.
I would agree with them on one count.

Were this an isolated incident between two kids, then they’d be correct in thinking it would be an overreaction.

But apparently it’s not. It’s been said to be systematic – that it had been going for a while – and by shutting down the system, the superintendent was doing the brave thing by drawing a line in the sand and saying “it stops here!”

Not all agree and it's sad that all that matters to the aforementioned parents is playing the game.
And God only knows how sacrosanct the game of football is in society.

And to that community.
I’d agree that this scandal shouldn’t besmirch the good reputation of the community and its hard working citizens.

Just like the entire community of those who attend Penn State don’t deserve the reputation of being thought of as “perv state!”

However the parents who yell and scream that their kids that did nothing to deserve having their football season taken away from them have lost perspective.

Which is that there are some things more important than football.

And that living in the “glass house” society that we do – has its consequences.

Namely, nothing happens without the rest of us knowing about it.
