A New Jersey assemblywoman is hoping to convince school board members in Jersey City to name a new elementary school after President Barack Obama.

Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, (D-Jersey City), originally urged the city's school board to name School 20 after the President, but a committee of school officials instead chose Maya Angelou, according to NJ Advance Media. McKnight felt naming the school after Obama would be a "positive inspiration" for students and she gathered more than 1,000 signatures on a petition supporting the idea, the article states.

McKnight is now urging the district to bestow Obama's name on School 34, which had 522 students in the 2014-15, and a student body that's 61 percent black and 89 percent "economically disadvantaged," according to NJ Advance Media.

School officials say they are also seeking suggestions for other names for School 34. Suggestions can be sent in writing to Superintendent Marcia V. Lyles, Business Administrator Luigi Campana and the school board, 366 Claremont Ave., Jersey City, N.J., 07305.
