I’ve been in and out of therapy with different therapists many times in my life, and one thing I know for sure is this: the challenge of finding the right therapist is what stops a lot of people from getting help in the first place.

It can feel overwhelming, and if you don’t connect with the person, you’re probably not going to get what you need out of it. The minute I met the people at Aspire Counseling, I knew it was different.

They are a New Jersey company, and they’re bound to understand New Jerseyans better than a therapist from some giant, random therapy conglomerate somewhere in Silicon Valley. And everyone I’ve sent there has said the same thing: Their therapists really GET you.

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, let me share some important statistics with you. The National Alliance for Mental Illness reports that 1 in 5 American adults experiences a mental health illness each year. Those mental health issues can range from less serious to very serious: In 2024, there were over 48,800 known suicide deaths in the United States.

"In 2019, a meta-analysis of psychotherapy studies found that participating in mental health services successfully reduced a person's suicidal thoughts by 55% and decreased actual suicide attempts by almost 40%," said Angela Armendariz, LCSW, founder and owner of Aspire Counseling. "That's significant! Having someone to talk to, someone on your side, someone to help you through the darkest times, that's a large part of the benefit of therapy.  And it works!"

For me, therapy has never just been about fixing a problem in the moment. Yes, it helps with anxiety, big life changes, stress, and relationships, but it also gives you tools for the future.

"Learning all of these skills and building self-awareness should lead to real change and real improvements in how you work, how you interact with your spouse, partner, or children, how you take care of yourself, and even how you enjoy life," Armendariz said. "It's such a worthy process."

I honestly think everybody can benefit from therapy at some point, and Aspire makes it incredibly easy because it’s all online and on your phone. No hassle. They’re just different.
