EDISON — Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Sunday morning near an apartment complex after rescue workers were called to the scene for a report of a small fire.

In a statement Sunday night, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said the body of an unidentified man was discovered at about 6:14 a.m. behind the Valley Manor apartment complex in Edison. The complex is near a Route 1 bridge that spans the Raritan River.

According to police, the man's remains were discovered after authorities extinguished the blaze. The prosecutor's office said the identity of the man is still under investigation. He was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m. following an initial investigation at the scene, authorities said.

Billy Sullivan, a resident of the apartment complex who reported the fire, told NJ.com that he “heard a loud bang” around 6 a.m. and saw the blaze when he looked out his window.

Authorities have not said how the fire started. The prosecutor's office said the investigation is active and is continuing. Police are asking anyone with information to call Detective Joseph Kenney of the Edison Police Department at 732-248-7400, or Detective James Napp of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3300.
