Authorities in northern Mississippi who tracked down a fugitive accused of kidnapping two girls and killing their mother and older sister say they repeatedly ordered him to surrender, but he instead pulled out a pistol and shot himself in the head.

Adam Mayes was later pronounced dead and the two sisters — 12-year-old Alexandria Bain and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain — were rescued Thursday, ending a nearly two-week search that began when Jo Ann Bain and her three daughters disappeared from their Tennessee home.

Aaron T. Ford, special agent in charge of the FBI's Memphis office, says Mayes and the girls were found in a densely wooded area after authorities got a tip.

He says the girls were found safe and have been hospitalized as a precaution.
