A small block of homes in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township was evacuated as crews from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst battle a brush fire in the base's range area.

Officials from the base say the blaze broke out earlier Wednesday. In a statement, the base said "the decision to evacuate the homes was a precautionary measure taken by officials to ensure the safety of everyone in the area."

Crews from the Joint Base officials were working with the New Jersey State Forest Service and Burlington County Fire Department Wednesday afternoon to contain and extinguish the fire.

Officials at the Joint Base say there have been no reported injuries and no structural damage to any nearby buildings. In a Nixle alert sent to nearby residents, Pemberton advised the community that Pemberton Road, Browns Mills Road and Livingston Road were closed and suggested that drivers in the area use alternate routes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the Joint Base.
