The Senate Judiciary Committee has agreed to give Gov. Chris Christie's Supreme Court pick a hearing on May 31, but the nomination of the gay, black Republican mayor appears to be in trouble.

Sen. Nick Scutari, the Linden Democrat who chairs the panel, tells The Associated Press he questions whether Bruce Harris "is up to the job."

The confirmation hearing comes two months after the Democrat-controlled committee rejected another Christie nominee over concerns about the finances of a family-owned liquor store.

Harris is the mayor of Chatham in Morris County. He would be the third African-American to be seated on the court and the first openly gay justice. The 61-year-old Yale Law School graduate faces difficulty being confirmed because of his lack of courtroom experience.
