Three firefighters were reportedly injured in an 8-alarm blaze that burned through a six-story building in Passaic.

According to ABC7, the fire began just after 9 p.m. in a multi-story building at 290 Gregory Ave. According to ABC 7, part of the roof has already collapsed. Emergency crews evacuated the building.

Fios 1 New Jersey reports three firefighters were hospitalized, including one for burns and another for injuries sustained when a roof collapsed on top of him.

 

NJ.com reported that according to Passaic County spokesman Keith Furlong,  300 and 400 people have been displaced.

Firefighters attempted to knock down the fire on the fourth floor first, but had difficulty containing the flames as the massive fire continued to spread. Crews retreated, battling the blaze from the fifth floor.

Fire departments from several municipalities responded to help bring the blaze under control. NJ.com reports that at least seven ladder trucks were directing streams of water toward the burning structure.

The Red Cross tweeted it was were sending a Disaster Action Team to Passaic to help the displaced families. It is not yet known exactly how many people lost their homes.

As of early Thursday morning, authorities had not yet determined what caused the blaze.

At about 2 a.m. Regional Fire Photos tweeted that the fire had been knocked down and some units were being released.
