PATERSON (AP) — A woman and two children had to jump out a window as a fire destroyed several homes in Paterson, injuring four people and displacing 28 others.

The fire began around 3:44 a.m. Friday at a home on 477 Ellison Street. It spread to adjacent homes at 475 and 479 Ellison.

Several neighbors helped rescue people.

Fire Chief Michael Postorino tells The Record the 25-year-old woman, 6-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy who jumped to safety are expected to be OK. A fourth person sustained injuries from smoke inhalation.

The fire destroyed two homes and the third sustained smoke damage.

Postorino says the cause is under investigation.
