I was at a restaurant last night when I noticed something in small print at the bottom of the menu. This policy of automatically including a 20% gratuity on your bill for larger parties didn't affect me since it was just my fiancee and me, but I hate when restaurants do this.

When you're in a sitdown restaurant with table service, everyone knows the rules. 15% tip if you're old school, 20% tip if you've adjusted to the 'new normal.' What, though, are the rules when sending out for a pizza or Chinese?

It's that time of year again, when we craft our budgets right down to the last dime, figure out how much we can afford to get the kids for Christmas plus meet all our other financial obligations, then scream "OH CRAP" when we realize we didn't factor in all the tipping we're expected to do every year.

The subject of tipping comes up pretty frequently on the show. If you go out, chances are you're going to encounter a situation in which you're expected to tip.

In tipping, the rule of thumb for me was always to give 20% of the bill before taxes. However, that would change when it came to delivering something to the house, or if a service person came over to perform a task like fixing the washing machine...

It seems as though the restaurant industry is pushing for a higher percentage as the standard for tipping when you want to go out to eat.

How bad does service have to be before you consider stiffing or under-tipping a waiter or waitress? There's good service, there's mediocre service and then there's dreadful service.
