What does the Common Core actually mean?

You can ask school officials, teachers and parents about what the 'Common Core' is and you can receive 3 completely different answers. You hear the name and the term thrown around but it doesn't seem like anyone has a full grasp on what 'Common Core' is supposed to be.

The goal of Common Core is to provide a standard level of education in subjects such as Math and English, to students who should have a basic level of understanding by the end of each grade.
