A dead crow found in Point Pleasant has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The Ocean County Health Department says it's the first one of the 2012 season. They will step up surveillance areas and advise everyone to clear bird baths and kiddie pools often and keep lawns and bushes trimmed.

Residents throughout Ocean County should call the OCHD to report dead crows, blue jays or other birds by calling 732-341-9700.

West Nile Virus is a type of virus spread when a mosquito bites an infected bird and then bites a person and affects their nervous system according to the Centers for Disease Control. It is characterized by fever, headache, tiredness, aches and sometimes rash. Although the illness can be as short as a few days, even healthy people have been sick for several weeks.
