NJ State Police are investigating a crash involving a school bus and a car that left two men dead Monday afternoon in Southampton.

The New Jersey State Police said in a press release that the crash took place on Pemberton Road in Southampton, Burlington County.

According to police, preliminary investigation shows that at 5 p.m. Tuesday, a Volkswagen Passat collided with a bus that was carrying members of the the Lenape High School swim team. In addition, two coaches and the bus driver were in the vehicle. An earlier version of this post incorrectly referred to the school as Lenape Valley High School.

"The crash occurred in the lane where the bus was traveling," the press release states.

Police say the both the driver and occupant of the Passat were pronounced dead at the scene by medical crews who responded to the crash.

"There were 20 students on the bus. Eight students and one adult were taken to Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly with minor injuries," authorities said.

Police say the cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Crews remained on the scene early Tuesday evening conducting an investigation. No additional information was released by police.
