EARLIER:

Several of the cars are flipped on their side according to ABC 7 at Palisades Avenue and Independence Avenue about 100 yards north of the  Spuyten Duyvel station as it was coming around a sharp curve.  CBS New York reports there are numerous injuries and possible fatalities.

Despite initial confirmation of some passenger cars in the water police say none of them are in the Harlem River but came very close. The train's engine is leaking diesel fuel.

Passenger Frank Tatulli, who takes the same train every Sunday,  told 7 ABC the train was traveling faster than it usually does. He was able to get off the train himself but has neck and head injuries.

Joel Zaritsky told The Associated Press he was on his way to New York City for a dental convention. "I was asleep and I woke up when the car started rolling several times. Then I saw the gravel coming at me, and I heard people screaming. There was smoke everywhere and debris. People were thrown to the other side of the train," he said, holding his bloody right hand.

Passengers were taken off the derailed train, with dozens of them bloodied and scratched, holding ice packs to their heads. Firefighters had to break windows to get to some passengers.

130 firefighters are on the scene of the early morning accident.

The train was the 5:54a.m. out of Poughkeepsie scheduled to arrive at Grand Central Station at 7:43 a.m.

Amtrak has canceled service between Albany and New York on it's Empire Line.  New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bernie Wagenblast says the accident scene is just beyond where the Amtrak line splits from the Metro-North line and could also effect passengers heeded to Buffalo, Montreal and Rutland, Vermont.

Amtrak says the accident will not have an affect on the Northeast Corridor.

Metro-North service on the Hudson Line between Poughkeepsie and New York is also suspended.
