Uber and Lyft on Monday suspended their ride-hailing services in Austin after voters decided against overturning city requirements that include fingerprinting their drivers.
New Jersey's largest city and Uber announced a deal in which the company will pay the city $3 million up front as part of a 10-year $10 million agreement.
It will cost Uber up to $100 million and took some significant policy concessions, but the ride-hailing company is forging forward with its thriving business model by keeping its drivers independent contractors, for now.
Pennsylvania regulators fined Uber $11.4 million on Thursday -- a record for the utility commission -- for operating for six months in 2014 without the required approval. The company said it would appeal.
In an emailed statement, Mayor Ras Baraka said the tentative agreement will keep Uber in Newark while protecting the existing taxi and limousine industry.
