New Jersey's Stevens Institute of Technology will be one of 20 teams from around the world participating in the Solar Decathlon 2013.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the selection on Thursday.

The teams will have two years to build solar-powered, highly energy-efficient homes that combine affordability, consumer appeal and design.

Associate dean Keith Sheppard says the Stevens team intends to showcase how sustainable housing can be engineered to provide new designs for construction and adaptability.

The competition will take place at California's Orange County Great Park in 2013.
