Eric Scott’s Top Fall HVAC Maintenance Tips (Plus $50 Off Heating Repairs)
As a long-time homeowner, I've been checking furnace filters, carbon monoxide detectors, and similar technology for decades.
It's easy to forget something or miss how maintenance changes with newer models, so I asked the experts at Rylee Home Services: If I had 15 minutes this weekend to get my house ready for colder weather, what should I check? They really emphasized that you should not wait until the first big snowfall or cold snap to check to see if your furnace works.
Here are their biggest tips:
1) Test your thermostat and cycle it from cooling to heating. Make sure the thermostat displays respond appropriately and ensure hot air comes out of the vents without any unusual noise or strong smells. You may notice a slight burning smell as the unit burns off dust that accumulated while the furnace wasn't running, but anything beyond a slight smell warrants a service call.
2) Make sure your supply and return vents aren't blocked. Some rooms just don't offer many options for arranging a couch without blocking a vent, but do your best to avoid it. Any covered vents and returns will directly affect the temperature in that area.
3) Clear debris from inside or around the outside unit. Sticks, leaves, dirt, litter, and other debris can really take a toll on your heat pump or condenser, so every few months, take the time to remove anything that could cause an issue.
4) Change or wash your filter as directed. Filters need to be changed or washed regularly, although the exact timeline depends on the type and thickness of the filter. Develop a reliable system for reminding yourself when it's time to take action, such as writing the install and change date right on the filter or setting a reminder on your cellphone.
5) Schedule a heating inspection with Rylee Home Services and get $50 off any repair through the end of September. They work with furnaces (gas, propane, and oil), boilers, heat pumps, mini-splits, and more.
As a family-owned company with unionized technicians, Rylee Home Services believes in showing up prepared, finishing what they start, and standing behind their work. Aside from installation and repairs, they also offer maintenance plans for all heating and cooling needs.
