Donald Trump is getting a taste of what missing an endorsement from the New Hampshire Union Leader can mean for a candidate.

The newspaper, which endorsed Gov. Chris Christie, wrote an editorial supporting Christie's Social Security plan and railing against the "left-wing lies" the paper said Trump is spreading about Christie's plan.

The Christie plan, according to the editorial, would raise the retirement age for younger workers and "means-test" benefits for those earning more than $200,000 per year in retirement income.  The paper, however, said Trump told seniors in Virginia that “Governor Christie wants to raise the age so that you have to wait another, you know, pretty extended period of time. It’s not fair. You’ve been paying in for years."

The editorial concludes that Trump would "pander to seniors, do nothing" and, in a swipe at Trump's troubled Atlantic City properties, "watch Social Security go as bankrupt as one of his casinos."

Trump received the endorsement of the New England Police Benevolent Association on Thursday during a an event in Portsmouth, N.H.

In a new WBUR poll of likely Republican primary voters, Trump has a huge lead with 27 percent followed by a surging Christie with 12 percent. He is just ahead of Mario Rubio, Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush, each separated by a percentage point. The poll was taken Dec. 6 through 8 as Trump made his comments about not allowing Muslims into the U.S.
