Eight-year-old Nicholas Jordan and his 7-year-old brother, Anthony, were placed in protective custody in South Carolina after their 47-year-old father, John Jordan, was arrested early Saturday near a relative's home in Greenville. Authorities say Jordan drove there with his sons' after he fatally stabbed his estranged wife, 39-year-old Tracey Jordan, in her Lodi apartment on Friday.

Officials say child welfare authorities in both states must investigate the boys' maternal and paternal relatives before determining where the children will be placed. It wasn't known when that decision will be made.

Jordan has been charged with murder and weapons charges. He remains in custody in South Carolina awaiting extradition proceedings.
