The only Hispanic Republican Lawmaker in New Jersey says she won't support Donald Trump — because she wants a candidate who "unifies" the diverse communities she's known over her life.

“I think it’s more than just being the only Latina Republican in the Legislature,” Maria Rodriguez-Gregg told Politico. “I think it’s my whole life experience that leads me to not being able to support him.”

Rodriguez-Gregg, when asked whether she would attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, told Politico she had “other obligations.”

“My whole life experience, always being involved in diverse communities, makes me more open,” Rodriguez-Gregg said. “I want someone that unifies them and doesn’t divide us. But at the end of the day, he’s one person, and this country is greater than one man or one woman.”

Trump's ascension through the GOP primary has been a controversial one — with several national elected officials shunning his comments about Mexican immigrants and Mulsims, though many say they'll still support him. House Speaker Paul Ryan said earlier this month Trump made the “textbook definition of a racist comment” in saying an American-born judge isn’t qualified to preside over a case because of his Mexican heritage — but wouldn't withdraw his endorsement.

Newsworks in May reported on several Latino residents who said they were strongly opposed to Trump and his rhetoric.

“He’s making us a target. I feel like if he gets elected, he will do the best in his power to send me back to Mexico,” Jose Silverio, 26, who lives in Princeton and works at his aunt’s Good Taste restaurant in Lawrenceville, told Newsworks. “I wouldn’t have anywhere to go in Mexico. That’s not home.”

Of New Jersey's 44 Republican state lawmakers, 42 are white. The Politico report notes the only other non-white lawmaker, Sen. Kevin O’Toole — who’s half Korean-American — supports Trump.
