So here we are again. Another Fairleigh Dickinson University poll with the same result.

Fourteen years ago, FDU did a poll finding 63% of New Jerseyans wanted to stick with a ban on self-serve gas and only 23% wanted to pump their own. All these years later and even after a major push with legislation that would have allowed the option of both full-serve and self-serve, a new FDU poll was nearly identical: 64% wanted only full-serve and a mere 24% wanted self-serve gas.

New Jersey 101.5 reported that demographics across the board were opposed. Female, male, old, young, Republican, Democrat, it didn’t matter. No majority wants to lift America’s only statewide ban on self-serve gas.

It’s ridiculous.

Hey, New Jersey? At least be consistent. If you think self-serve is so bad, ban all of it. Why won’t you? The truth is you’re just used to what you kid yourself is a luxury. In no universe should luxury be defined as service that takes too long, has non-communicative people performing it who won’t even get off the cell phone during the transaction, and absolutely nothing further is provided like checking oil or cleaning windshields.

But hey, if this is fine with you, then be consistent and demand a ban on all forms of self-serve. A few examples.

Self-checkout

If you’re going to talk about job loss at gas stations (and by the way with the hybrid proposal there wouldn’t have been much job loss) then also worry about the cashier job loss at so many retailers and convenience stores across the state. Don’t ever scan anything yourself to save time at a store if you won’t let me have the option to pump my own gas.

Airport self-check-in kiosks

Hey Jersey girl who won’t pump her own gas? Go stand at the longer line at the ticket counter at Newark Liberty and stop using the self-check-in. After all, it’s a luxury to wait, right?

ATMs

Don’t even think about it. Don’t even dare go to a convenient, fast ATM and avoid going inside the bank and waiting in line.

Self-serve soda fountains

Those fast-food joints that hand you a cup and let you control how much or how little ice you want or allow you to get crazy and pour half Coke and half Sprite? Don’t. If I don’t get to control not having my tank topped off even though I told the attendant not to then you don't get control your ice.

Buffets

Yes, you need to be consistent and stop going for buffet brunches no matter how much you want one. Stick to a server coming to your table and a kitchen dictating your portions. Why? Because I say so. Just like you say I shouldn’t be allowed the option to pump my own fuel.

See how ridiculous this is?
