Blooming WOWs: Dan Zarrow’s Guide to Garden State Gardens
Spring is in the air. As temperatures continue to warm, this is the time of year when the Garden State truly earns its nickname.
New Jersey is in full bloom, as trees, lawns, and flowers come alive. Plus, let's not forget our famously fresh produce, from tomatoes to corn to blueberries. Those budding blossoms not only look delightful and taste delicious, they also present wonderful opportunities for fun, educational, family-friendly outings around New Jersey.
It is impossible to outline every garden, farm, and blooming WOW across the entire state. But I highly recommend checking out VisitNJ's Guide to Gardens of the Garden State. I will highlight some of my favorite flowering hot spots in NJ, worthy of a stroll, picnic, or breath of fresh spring air.

Rutgers Gardens — New Brunswick
Operated by Rutgers University, this expansive living plant museum is free to visit and packed with sights. Stroll through blooming flower beds and the bamboo grove, perfect for curious kids. And visit the seasonal Cook's Market for farm-fresh produce and treats.
Duke Farms — Hillsborough
This sprawling former estate turned natural paradise is a real gem for nature lovers. With walking trails, lakes, and a stunning orchid range, it is a springtime escape full of learning and beauty.
Grounds For Sculpture — Hamilton
A magical mix of manicured gardens and massive artwork, this 42-acre park turns nature into a canvas. Families will love wandering among nearly 300 larger-than-life sculptures and discovering hidden surprises around every bend.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum — Morris Township
A horticulture haven. Step into serenity with formal gardens and wooded trails, all beautifully maintained. Special programs highlight different blooms and specialty gardens each month through the growing season.
Holland Ridge Farms — Cream Ridge
This place puts the “wow” in wildflowers! Known for its tulips in the spring and sunflowers in the fall, it’s a picnic-perfect selfie paradise. How many Dutch wooden clogs can you find hidden around the property?
Alstede Farms — Chester
From strawberries to peas to raspberries to blueberries, Alstede offers way more than just pick-your-own fun. Their flower fields and seasonal family events are very popular.
Deep Cut Gardens — Middletown
Hiding in Monmouth County, this horticultural haven was once owned by New York mobster Vito Genovese. Now part of Monmouth County Parks, it is full of roses, bonsai, and greenhouses. It’s quiet, colorful, and a cool spot for adults and kids alike.
New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands — Ringwood
Nestled within Ringwood State Park, this historic garden offers a tapestry of themed areas, including a vibrant array of colors and scents in their Perennial, Lilac, and Wildflower gardens.
Morven Museum and Garden — Princeton
Morven served as New Jersey's official governor's residence for many years. Now a National Historic Landmark, the public can tour numerous garden areas, flower beds, and orchards around the property. It's a slice of history nestled amongst natural beauty.
Reeves-Reed Arboretum — Summit
Small but mighty, this garden gem features the Daffodil Bowl, in bloom every spring. They offer a variety of self-guided and group tours around the 13.5-acre manicured estate.
