Medical Marijuana Bill Moves Forward

An Assembly panel has advanced a measure to let registered medical marijuana users in New Jersey obtain pot legally in other states.

The Health and Senior Services Committee advanced the bill to the full Assembly Thursday with a 7-4 vote.

Advocates say the change in the state's medical marijuana law is needed so patients who would be helped by a certain strain and form of marijuana would be able to get it. They cite a toddler with a debilitating form of epilepsy whose parents believe she would be helped by edible marijuana with a certain mix of chemicals.

But that form is not available in New Jersey, where there are now three dispensaries.

Gov. Chris Christie has said he opposes any further expansion of the state's medical marijuana law.
