The parents of Tyler Clementi say Rutgers University was right to fire men's basketball coach Mike Rice and believes that the university is working on making the campus a safe place for all students, including gays.

Clementi was a Rutgers freshman in 2010 when he killed himself after learning that his roommate had used a webcam to see him kiss another man.

The roommate was later convicted of bias intimidation in a case that drew worldwide attention to bullying of young gays and led to policy changes at Rutgers.

Rice was fired Wednesday after the public airing of video showing him shoving and kicking players and using a gay slur during practice.

Lawmakers and a gay rights group are calling for deeper investigation into why Rice wasn't fired earlier.
