After the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, prosecutors in Colorado will be deciding over the weeks to come whether to seek the death penalty for James Holmes. The death penalty has always been a divisive issue. As it was in New Jersey in 2007 when it was abolished here.

Curiously, a Quinnipiac poll that year found NJ voters by 53 to 39 percent opposed that move. Yet given the option, 52 to 39 percent favored life in prison with no parole. It seems New Jerseyans at that time wanted the option of a death penalty, but would only want to use it in the most extreme cases such as serial killers or child murderers.

Which brings us to the most extreme mass shooting in U.S. history, the Dark Knight Rises massacre in Aurora, Colorado.
