The body of a man who ended up in the Passaic River in Newark Monday has been recovered following a lengthy search of the cold, murky water.

The victim's body was located and pulled from the river after Newark Fire Department crews used an underwater camera to search the water, Acting Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose told NJ Advance Media Tuesday.

Divers and rescue workers began the search Monday after friends of the victim contacted authorities around 5 p.m. and stated that he had ended up in the water and they were unable to help him before he was swept away, NJ Advance Media reported Monday.

Rescue workers suspended the search Monday evening around 11 p.m. and resumed recovery efforts Tuesday.

An investigation into how the man ended up in the Passaic River is ongoing. the victim's name has not yet been released. officials told NJ Advance Media that suicide was not suspected.
