2 men and teen charged in carjacking, slaying of neighborhood activist in Newark

NEWARK — An 18-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy have been charged with murder in connection with a fatal car jacking that killed a woman in front of her nephew on Thanksgiving night. A second adult man was charged with fleeing police in the stolen vehicle.

Supreme A. Allah Jr.,18, Antonio L. Torres, 20, and the teen were found by police riding in a Kia Sorrento that belonged the victim on Friday, according to acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino. After a brief pursuit, the three were caught.

Shuri Henry, 40, was shot as she walked out to her car after 11 p.m. on Thursday night with her nephew.

NJ.com reported Henry had been organizing a meeting to improve the quality of life in her neighborhood.

"How devastating for her to be taken on Thanksgiving when she's given so much to everyone around her," NJ.com quoted Lyndon Brown, a community leader who worked with Henry, as saying.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly said additional arrests are possible.

Allah and the teen both face charges of murder, felony murder, robbery, carjacking, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and conspiracy to commit murder. Torres is charged with eluding.

Torres already has been arrested several times as an adult. He was busted last year on criminal trespass charges in Essex County, according to jail records. Information about the status of that case was not available Saturday. He also was arrested on Oct. 1 on charges of receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools. He was released four days later.
