HIGHLANDS — A 12-year-old girl rescued from the beach in Sandy Hook on Sunday has died.

Lifeguards pulled the girl our of the surf on Beach E around 5:50 p.m. and administered CPR before she was taken to Monmouth Medical Center, according to Gateway National Park spokeswoman Daphne Yun. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Beach E is a guarded beach open until 9 p.m. daily during the summer.

The girl was at the beach with her family, according to Yun. She would not disclose the girl's identity nor any other circumstances around the incident.

The national park's parking lot filled to capacity around noon on Sunday because of the weather.

The girl's death is at least the second of the weekend. A 2-year-old girl was found in a pool in Galloway on Sunday after being reported missing.
