NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Officials are urging parents to take precautions after a first-grader in Newark died of suspected bacterial meningitis.

The city is recommending students who came into close contact with the child be screened by a doctor and treated for meningitis as a precaution.

The child died on March 5 and officials are awaiting results to determine whether she had the infection.

Officials say no other cases have been reported and the school underwent a thorough cleaning.
