Christie signs new law moving license renewal to date of birth

TRENTON — Birthdays will mean a trip to the Motor Vehicle Commission for some New Jersey drivers under legislation that Gov. Chris Christie signed into law.

Christie signed on Friday legislation that changes driver's license expiration dates from the last day of the month every four years to the driver's birthday.

The new law amounts to the fulfillment of one Christie's pledges.

The legislation got final legislative approval last month after the Republican governor suggested the change last year as a way to ease wait times at the state's MVC offices.

The change was among a number of recommendations, including the elimination of online transaction fees, that Christie proposed in response to customer service complaints.

The measure was passed by the Democrat-led Legislature without any opposition.
