If you get caught by a New Jersey police officer not wearing a seat belt, you can be subjected to a $46 fine. If your pet is seen not wearing a seat belt, you can be on the hook for a fine between $250 and $1,000 thanks to a disorderly persons charge. How does this make any sense? Do we now view the lives of pets as more valuable than friends, family or ourselves? I love my two dogs more than anything, but I know for sure that when I'm bringing my dogs in the car with me, I'm more focused on making sure I'm as safe as I can possibly be.

I'm not saying I'm going to put my dog in the front seat and run around aimlessly, I'll make sure that they're in the backseat, with the windows a quarter of the way down and no way of escaping.
