September 16th

1965 - The Rolling Stones help kick off the second season of the music variety show "Shindig!" by singing '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'. Also performing that night were The Kinks and The Byrds. It would be the final season of the show, as ratings steadily dropped off. Its Thursday time slot would be replaced by Batman.

1977 - Marc Bolan front-man of T.Rex dies in a car crash two weeks before his 30th birthday. He was a passenger in a purple Mini 1275GT which was driven by Gloria Jones as they headed home from a restaurant in London. Jones lost control of the car and struck a sycamore tree killing Bolan instantly.  He is best known for his 'Bang on a Gong (Get It On)' hit with T. Rex.

1985Dire Straits is at No. 1 on the singles charts with 'Money for Nothing'. It first appeared on their 1985 album Brothers in Arms and subsequently became an international hit when released as a single. The song was notable for its groundbreaking music video and Sting singing the song’s iconic falsetto introduction and famous line "I want my MTV."

2004 - A coroner's report is finally released for Rick James death and shows nine different drugs had been in his system at the time of his death in August.
