In 1942, the average amount of sleep we got was 7.9 hours. Now, it's 6.8 hours. I suspect in a place like New Jersey with the terrible traffic conditions we have making for longer commutes and earlier alarms it's even less. Turns out we had it right in the old days. A study that tracked thousands of men and women over many years and published in JournalSleep.org says the exact amount of sleep a woman needs is 7.6 hours. For a man? 7.8 hours.
