Faustino Fernandez-Vina was sworn in Tuesday during a private ceremony. That came one day after the Cuban-American judge from Camden County had been confirmed by the state Senate.

The 61-year-old Republican was nominated by Gov. Chris Christie to replace another Republican, whom Christie did not re-nominate for tenure.

Fernandez-Vina will be the only Hispanic on the Supreme Court, but not the first.

Two other Christie Supreme Court nominees have stalled, while two others were rejected by Democrats who control the state Senate. Senior appellate court judges have been called up temporarily to fill gaps on the seven-member Supreme Court.
