A Cuban-American judge from Camden County was confirmed unanimously to the state Supreme Court on Monday, making him the court's only Hispanic justice and the first of Gov. Chris Christie's nominees to be confirmed in more than two years.

There’s good news today for one of Gov. Chris Christie’s three State Supreme Court nominees. Sen. President Steve Sweeney and Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Nick Scutari have set a confirmation hearing date of Oct. 17 for Faustino Fernandez-Vina. The hearing will come one day after N.J’s special election for the U.S. Senate.

Following public threats from Democratic Sen. Ray Lesniak that he would play “hardball” with Gov. Chris Christie over his State Supreme Court justice nominations, Christie has decided not to re-nominate associate justice Helen Hoens. The Governor says he wants to spare Hoens from having to be raked over the coals by Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
