Director of developer platform for The Echo Nest and music blogger Paul Lamere recently created a US map that stirred up some fun controversy across the country. Every state on the map is represented by its supposed favorite music artist.

How did Lamare find these results? According to his blog, he sampled the listening preferences of about a quarter million listeners that have a zip code associated with their streaming service accounts. He then "aggregated these listeners into regions (state, regional and all-US)." Read more about Lamare's research by visiting his blog here.

Check out the map below.

I think New Jersey has by far the most predictable result here with Bruce Springsteen being its most listened to artist. Some of the others really caught me by surprise. Why does Arizona still like Linkin Park when they haven't released a good album in ten years? Matchbox Twenty representing West Virginia? I understand rapper Juicy J is from Memphis, but how does he come out in front of the thousands of country and soul musicians who have made Tennessee so famous?
